Recently a movie Shaitan got released under the Anurag Kashyap production. As usual I was going through the reviews of it and at many places I read that it is an upgraded version of 10 years old movie PAANCH directed by Anurag Kashyap himself. I was having faint memories of promo of this movie but did not remember what happened with the movie. As the promo were suggesting it was a low budget movie with low profile star cast with the only famous one KK Menon and incidentally my favorite.
While surfing the internet for movie, I came to know that this movie was banned completely. This was a new thing to me as I was aware that censor board cut some scenes from movies but did not know that a movie can be banned completely. The reasons given were:-
1. It glorifies drug.
2. There is no social message.
3. There is no positive character.
What a stupidity it was. So there was more curiosity to see this movie. Actually the things those are banned attract us more or you can say we have the habit to enjoy the controversies. I looked around the internet to get the torrent for this movie and to my surprise I got the torrent easily. Dont know from where the torrent came as the movie was neither released in theater and not on DVD. It was a preview copy that some how might have leaked.
After watching and even while watching the movie, I felt for Anurag as each and every character in the movie has given his/her best performance. You can count the actors in the movie on fingers. There were no more than 10 actors and thats why you can observe the performance of each and every actor.
The movie is tightly scripted and there is no much violence and no vulgarity at all. There is use of abusive language but that is now a common trend in movies now a days and can be easily avoided at that time too by silencing or beep sound as done in online copy. There are no brutal killing sequence or sex scenes. Though 10 years have passed yet this movie can compete with any latest movie in direction or cinematography.
The story is basically of five people who can not be called friends exactly but a member of Rock band who are addicted with drugs and perform sometimes. They are bonded by needs as they dont have any other work. One of the member is a girl Shuilli(Tejaswini Kolhapure) and one of the member have a feeling for him however she run after money only and thus with new boys everyday. Luke (KK) is the head of group and very aggressive. The place where they live belongs to father of one of their friends. Everytime they perform something bad happens and they are without money again. Someone suggested them to create an album but it will require lakhs of rupees which they dont have.
The friend who is the owner of the flat where they live suggested them that they can kidnap him and ask for ransom from his father. Luke liked the idea and after reluctance everyone agreed for shortcut. They asked for ransom from his father who is friend of sharp inspector (Sharat Saxena). On the other hand Shuilli was also included in the plan by his lover against the will of Luke. Luke becomes angry and had an argument with the kidnapped friend and killed him in anger.
From here the movie starts to run on full pace. There are some strange sequences too which you may think why it is happening or why they are behaving like this such as dancing in his friend's house and starting the music system when they were stealing money from the house. But when you will see the climax you will understand each and every thing.
There are enough twists in the movie to keep you engaged. Sometime is becomes predictable as many movies have been made on this theme but you can not be sure of your prediction till you see it. Performances are very good by each and every actor. KK is the best actor along with Ajay Devgan in current hindi movie industry and he has proved it here also. His arrogant and beasty character will keep you glued to screen. Tejasvini Kolhapure sister of Padmini kolhapure (Old hindi actress as well as producer of movie) is very good in her cunning lady performance. She could have gone quite a long way after this movie as she can act much better than most of the actress of recent time. But talent is not enough, luck is the most important thing which she was not having. Though a movie based on rock band, there is no much music in the movie hardly 3 songs are there. But there is no chance of getting bored in those songs as they have been aptly compiled and sang according to theme of movie.
Though the censor board stated that there is no social message in the movie but I will say there was a great social message in the end which many of the baseless movies dont provide. Movie Kaante that was released just 2 years after this does not have any positive character too as well as no message at all still censor board passed it.
I must say that this movie should be released at that time and is quite relevant this time too. Hats off to Anurag Kashyap for thinking beyond time. You may feel that you have seen it but thats not because of reason that the idea was old. The only reason will be that many directors have seen the movie and took ideas from it. Dont know whether Shaitan is the same movie in the new pack but still original is original :) and anurag you will agree with me on this too.
